European Treecreeper breeding in Twente in 2006
In April-May 2006, successful breeding of European Treecreeper Certhia familiaris macrodactyla took place at Lonnekerberg, Twente, Overijssel, the Netherlands. The six eggs hatched on 15 May; on 30 or 31 May, four young left the nest. This is the first documented breeding record of an unmixed pair for Overijssel (central-eastern part of the Netherlands). In 2005, a mixed pair of Short-toed C brachydactyla and Eurasian Treecreeper (either Scandinavian C f familiaris or European C f macrodactyla) bred near Olst, Overijssel. European Treecreeper is a scarce breeding bird in the Netherlands since at least 1993; breeding is mostly restricted to the extreme south-eastern part of Limburg but the range is slowly expanding, mainly along the German border. The breeding record described here fits well into this pattern.
