American Robin near Heemskerk in April 2014

On 27 April 2014, a first-summer male American Robin Turdus migratorius was discovered in the extensive dune area west of Heemskerk, Noord-Holland, the Netherlands. During the rest of the day, the bird proved mobile and elusive but was eventually seen by more than 400 birders. This was the first record for the Netherlands. There are almost 70 previous records in Europe, of which c 50 in the Azores, Britain, Iceland and Ireland combined and almost 20 in mainland Europe.
