WarbleR : computations with XC data

A paper on the R package WarbleR just appeared. Marcelo Arayas and Grace Smith explain how the package can be used to obtain automated access to the database and perform all kinds of computations with the data. As the paper writes: 'The package [allows] displaying the geographic extent of the recordings, manipulating sound files, detecting acoustic signals or importing detected signals from other software, assessing performance of methods that measure acoustic similarity, conducting cross-correlations, measuring acoustic parameters and analysing interactive vocal signals, among others.' The package is frequently updated, for example with the song catalogues illustrated here.

What is xeno-canto?

xeno-canto is a website dedicated to sharing wildlife sounds from all over the world. Whether you are a research scientist, a birder, or simply curious about a sound that you heard out your kitchen window, we invite you to listen, download, and explore the wildlife sound recordings in the collection.

But xeno-canto is more than just a collection of recordings. It is also a collaborative project. We invite you to share your own recordings, help identify mystery recordings, or share your expertise in the forums. Welcome!

Wow, Gilles Willem adds two bird species new for XC from Somaliland in Somalia: Somali Wheatear and the quite range restricted Somali Thrush. There are very few recordings from Somalia on XC. Also, they were the last Oenanthe and the last Turdus without recordings on XC. Fantastic contribution. Thanks for sharing Gilles!

Oops, too quick :-) He adds another new species, and the last Linaria, for XC: the very range restricted Warsangli Linnet.

... and a undescribed Cisticola to top it off. Crazy.

.... for a limited set of Bats, the European Bats, names in quite a few common languages are now available on XC. Many thanks to Ulf Elman for some pushing an pulling and for linking us to Magnus Gelang from the Natural History Museum in Gothenburg. Magnus came up with the lists that we ended up using: a set in different languages from the EuroBats publication no.7(2017) by Peter Lina, and a list with Swedish names he curates himself. Ulf put it all together. We hope it is useful.

Also, let's not forget Assoc. Prof. Johnny de Jong at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, for supplementing the data derived from the EuroBats publication and commenting on the taxonomy used by it.

Having had to wait for 13 years Chris Harrison is closing in on 150 species of frogs and toads. No lack of enthusiasm, Chris! Spread the word.

I'm about all caught up on species for now. But I've got thousands of recordings to get up here eventually.

Chris Harrison on April 7, 2024

Great, Chris. Drop us a line if you need some help getting larger amounts on the site. No hurry of course.

Bob Planqué on April 7, 2024

Chris - I've been following your North American species in particular, great stuff!

Daniel Parker on April 8, 2024

Almost forgot to mention Caribbean species too!

Daniel Parker on April 8, 2024

Years ago I followed ChrisH on Field Herp Forum and was always highly impressed by his knowledge and photography skills. His collection of frog vocalizations here is amazing.
