Een ochtend uit een fotografie- en vogelreis Onderweg naar het reservaat Sachatamia brengt u eerst een bezoek aan het Yanacocha Reservaat, ook bekend als Inca Ditch. Dit gebied ligt op een hoogte van 3.300 tot 4.000 meter. Het is vlak bij Quito gelegen aan de noordwestelijke helling van Volcán Pichincha. Dit overgebleven stuk Andes bos herbergt de zeer zeldzame Black-breasted Puffleg en is één van de meest geografisch beperkte en bedreigde kolibries van de wereld. De zeer steile lagere hellingen zijn nog bedekt met berg nevelwoud en Elfin Forest (dwergbos), de hogere hellingen gaan over in Paramó met af en toe kleine stukjes Polylepis (papierbomen). Dit reservaat van 19.000 hectare wordt nu beheerd door de NGO Fundación Jocotoco. Er zijn veel kolibrie feeders opgehangen langs de belangrijkste trail, om onderweg te kunnen genieten van vogels als Sparkling Violetear, Speckled Hummingbird, Giant Hummingbird, Shining Sunbeam, Mountain Velvetbreast, Great Sapphirewing, Collared Inca, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Sapphire-vented Puffleg, Golden-breasted Puffleg, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Green-tailed Trainbearer, en een behoorlijke variëteit aan Mountain Tanagers. | |
