Caspian Plover on Texel in October 2009

On 17-20 October 2009, a first-year Caspian Plover Charadrius asiaticus stayed in fields on Texel, Noord-Holland, the Netherlands. This is the first record for the Netherlands. The identification was based on, eg, size, long wings, long legs, fine bill, mostly dull sandy-brown plumage with white underparts and brownish breastband, distinctive face pattern with strong white supercilium and pale area around bill and pale underwings (excluding Greater Sand C leschenaultii, Lesser Sand C mongolus and Oriental Plover C veredus, as well as Eurasian Dotterel C morinellus). A list is presented of 29 extra­limital records in Europe, involving 32 individuals (see table 1). There are records from March to November, with 16 (19 individuals) in spring (March-June), five in summer (July-August) and seven in autumn (September-November).
