Oriental Pratincole near Sint Philipsland in September 2014

On 7-8 September 2014, an adult Oriental Pratincole Glareola maldivarum was present near Sint Philipsland, Zeeland, the Netherlands. The bird was well documented, making elimination of a heavily abraded Collared Pratincole G pratincola (ie, with worn white tips to the secondaries and abraded outer tail-feathers) straightforward. The identification was mainly based on the short tail (falling well short of the wing-tip at rest), lack of white trailing edge to the wing, oval-shaped nostril and some more subtle plumage characters. This was the second record for the Netherlands; the first was on 1-5 August 1997. There are now 13 records in Europe, almost half of which from England.
